more information about the metamorphosis play
NOTE: this wasn't prepared or written by me, but what the person who attended the play could remember. if you find out more information about it, or other kafka-related art, please let me know.

The play was written by Stephen Berkoff. I don't know too much about release dates, as this was just a final performance for the students degree. The performance I saw was just a one off, three day show.

I know that the BBC did a version of it in 1989(?) you *might* be able to find that on video somewhere. Try looking up both Berkoff and the BBC video archive on the 'net.

Actually, the play was quite interesting, had I not stumbled onto your site, I wouldn't have known that it was written by Kafka, it was advertised for all it was worth as being "Stephen Berkoff's Metamorphosis".

The bug problem was solved, in the beginning, by having several actors (who each played the various characters later on) representing a pulsating bug in a huddle in the centre of the stage. Later on, just one actor played Gregor, telling the audience all his thoughts and doing his movements, while a "shadow" portrayed the voice of the bug.

The three main characters, Greta, Mother and Father remained mainly on stools at the front of the stage, talking into the audience.

The play was fairly accurate to the text, and an interesting way of portraying a story that, seemingly (to me at least) would have been very difficult to dramatise based upon the text.

It's well worth seeking out, if you can, but, I'm afraid I have no means of helping you to do so.
